One Percent: The $10 Billion Stake Behind Anthropic’s $965 Billion Valuation

At Anthropic's current private valuation, a single early investor’s one percent ownership share is now valued at nearly $10 billion, signaling massive returns ahead of a potential $2 trillion IPO.

The most striking figure emerging from the latest financial data on Anthropic is that a single individual’s one percent ownership stake in the AI lab is now valued at nearly $10 billion. This valuation is anchored to the company’s most recent private market assessment of $965 billion, a figure that serves as the baseline for understanding the windfall currently accruing to its backers. While the company is widely expected to list publicly later this year at a valuation potentially reaching $2 trillion, the existing equity held by venture capitalists and early investors already represents billions of dollars in paper wealth.

The scale of these returns is best illustrated by the position of Eric Schmidt, the former CEO of Google. According to PitchBook data, Schmidt participated in Anthropic’s Series A funding round in 2021, when the startup was valued at a comparatively modest $461 million. Over the subsequent years, his ownership position has grown to approximately one percent of the company. At the current private valuation, this single-digit percentage interest translates to a personal holding worth close to $10 billion, a dramatic increase from his initial entry point.

Late-stage institutional investors have also secured substantial value, though their entry points were significantly higher. Iconiq, an investment firm, committed $6 billion to Anthropic last year, at a time when the company was already valued at $183 billion. This massive capital injection has since appreciated to a current value of $17 billion. If the company proceeds with an IPO at the projected $2 trillion mark, analysts suggest this particular investment could double in value again, further cementing the firm’s position in the AI sector.

Menlo Ventures holds a similarly significant position, having led Anthropic’s Series D round. The firm has cumulatively invested more than $1 billion in the company over time. Based on the latest private valuation, this aggregate investment is now worth approximately $14 billion. For a venture capital firm, such a return on capital within a relatively short timeframe highlights the intense capitalization of the leading AI developers in the current market cycle.

Sequoia Capital, one of the most prominent venture capital firms in the technology sector, entered the Anthropic portfolio more recently. The firm made its first investment in the AI lab earlier this year, when the company’s valuation had already climbed to $380 billion. By investing $3 billion, Sequoia secured approximately one percent ownership. Despite the high entry price, the investment has already more than doubled in value relative to the capital deployed, reflecting the rapid appreciation of the company’s equity.

Sound Ventures, a firm co-founded by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, represents another tier of investors who have seen substantial growth. The firm initially invested $35 million in Anthropic’s 2023 Series C round. Since then, it has funneled an additional $400 million into the company, resulting in a stake that is now worth billions. It is worth noting that Kutcher departed Sound Ventures earlier this year to establish a new venture capital firm, though the original firm’s holdings remain valued at the current high levels.

Perhaps the most dramatic multiple on investment belongs to Spark Capital, the only venture capital firm known to hold a board seat at Anthropic. Spark participated in the same 2023 Series C round as Sound Ventures, investing $75 million when the company was valued at $5 billion. Since that point, the value of Spark’s position has ballooned by more than ninetyfold. At the current private valuation, this initial $75 million investment is now worth approximately $7 billion, a testament to the explosive growth trajectory of the company.

These figures underscore the financial dynamics at play as Anthropic approaches its anticipated public listing. The spread between early entry points, such as Schmidt’s 2021 investment, and later rounds, like Sequoia’s 2026 entry, illustrates how valuation growth has compounded over time. For investors who entered at the $461 million mark, the current $965 billion valuation represents a transformational gain, while those entering at higher multiples are still realizing significant, though proportionally smaller, returns on their capital.

As the market awaits the official IPO, which could see the company valued at up to $2 trillion, these current valuations serve as a snapshot of the wealth concentration within the AI industry. The data suggests that both the earliest backers and the large-scale late-stage investors are poised for substantial liquidity events. The divergence in entry valuations, from the half-billion-dollar range to the hundreds of billions, highlights the rapid maturation of Anthropic from a startup to a global technological giant.

The financial landscape for Anthropic’s stakeholders is defined by these massive paper gains, which are already realized in private markets before any public trading begins. The potential for further appreciation at an IPO adds another layer of upside for all parties involved. As the company moves toward a public listing, the focus will shift from private valuation metrics to public market performance, but the baseline established by the current $965 billion assessment already secures billions for its most prominent backers.
